TIPS FOR A SUCCESSFUL WRITERS GROUP
from the Coffee and Ink crew
  1. Meet regularly. It may fit your schedule to meet every week or every two weeks, but set a time and stick to it.
  2. When you meet, write. Getting the pen in your hand for 20 minutes focuses your meeting on writing.
  3. Use a prompt for your group writing. A prompt gets your creativity flowing and keeps your hand moving. Accept where the prompt takes you.
  4. Read your writing aloud. Hearing your own words and listening to others, no matter what their skill level, helps you improve.
  5. Respect each other's work. Recognize that while writing styles differ, every group member's work can contribute to you.
  6. Bring your writing projects for feedback. Your group is a valuable asset in polishing your writing. Listen to what the members say and use what rings true for you.
  7. Include positive feedback. Positive feedback builds trust and encourages writers to build on their strengths.
  8. Share information. Let other group members know about a workshop, a new Web site, recently-published book, literary agent or fine author you've discovered.
  9. Establish a procedure for accepting new members. Guidelines can be simple, but they will prevent misunderstandings. Not all writers are a "fit" for your group. Orient new members and introduce yourselves and your work.
  10. Support each other. Your writers group may understand your work as no one else does. Return the favor. Encourage them in their writing and celebrate their victories.
